The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams Review

So this is a book that has been on my shelf for some time now, and seeing how it is classed as a sci-fi classic I thought that it was about time I got around to giving it a go. So what did I think of this?

One Thursday lunchtime the Earth gets unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the Galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

So a sci-fi classic? I can potentially see why so many people really enjoy this book and I can see why some people would class it as a classic but for me I think it hit a little bit too short for it to be considered that for me.

The story is easily the best part for me, you can instantly tell that this is where all the sci-fi elements that we get in today’s books, shows and movies all come from and I enjoyed that aspect of it, even if I was confused the majority of the time. The world gets demolished and we follow a random person from that world as they get introduced to the entire universe, that great and I loved it. I do wish that Douglas Adams created a better character though.

Out of the numerous characters that this book has can someone please tell me why the only one I could somewhat stand was the depressed robot? Arthur is so utterly boring and not someone at all you want as a main character, yes I do get why Douglas made this character the way he is to try and see even the most boring man can do something amazing or something along those lines but dear god I just didn’t care about him at all.

The book tries to be funny and back in 1979 when this book was released I could probably see this being funny due to the humour style it has but for today’s society then I can see it not being a great hit.

I do think a lot of people would probably enjoy this read a lot more than I did but for me the highest score I could possibly rate it is 3.5/5 and even then that is me being really generous because the story is pretty good.
