Food Wars! : Shokugeki no Soma Vol 1 Review

It has been some time since I got around to reading a manga series and I wanted something a bit different then people fighting so when I found a manga based on cooking I had to get the first volume and see if it was any good.

Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town.  Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school!  Can Soma really cut it in a school that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress of the school that he belongs there at all?!

Taken from goodreads

Instantly as soon as I started reading I know I had found my new favourite manga, the story grabbed my attention from the start and before I had even finished the first chapter I had ordered the next book on Amazon. Soma is someone I aim to be like, cocky to the point where it is almost impossible to like him until you see that he has an actual reason to be that cocky. Yes his dad has left him to go on his own adventure but Soma has a dream of being better then him so he keeps on training.

The art style goes perfect with just how fast paced cooking can be, even when a character is chopping some spring onions the art does a great job in showing the knife speed of a trained chef.

I was a bit shocked at some of the full art when a person has eaten something Soma has cooked but at the same time I understand why they had done it. When you eat something so unexpectedly good it does make you feel the same way they show it in the book.

Even though we have yet to be given a lot of information about some of the character yet I am really interested in getting to know more about Erina Nakiri and Megumi Tadokoro as even though they are both clashing with Soma I still want to know what sort of relationship they are going to end up having.

Overall, a great way to start a manga series and I can not wait to jump into the next book in the series to see how Soma does with working with the elites.
