Skulduggery Pleasant – Playing With Fire – Derek Landy Review

After re finding my love of this series after reading the first in the series it is time to continue on and see if I still love this series as much after finishing it.

Skulduggery and Valkyrie are facing a new enemy: Baron Vengeous, who is determined to bring back the terrifying Faceless Ones and is crafting an army of evil to help him. Added to that, Vengeous is about to enlist a new ally (if he can raise it from the dead): the horrible Grotesquery, a very unlikable monster of legend.

Once Vengeous is on the loose, dead bodies and vampires start showing up all over Ireland. Now pretty much everybody is out to kill Valkyrie, and the daring detective duo faces its biggest challenge yet.

But what if the greatest threat to Valkyrie is just a little closer to home?

What I love most about this series is the character progression you get with the main characters. Of course you get this quite a bit in series but when a story is written over three books then the character progression happens pretty quickly. However with this series being over 10 books the progression is slower and it makes you feel like you are growing up with the character. For me this just makes me fall in love with the characters even more. Valkyrie has always been confident but when she comes in a fight you can tell the difference between when she first started in the series to know. You get to see her skills improve and even surprising herself, skulduggery and us as a reader.

The humour is fantastic. I really hope I get to meet Derek Landy one day and tell him what his books had done to my humour. I find his books to be hilarious and you will struggle to find another fantasy series that can get the same from me. I think Derek Landy found a little niche that no one else was taking advantage of and has now made it his own.

The writing once again is fantastic, you just want to keep reading to find out more about how they are going to save the world this time or if they can’t think of a way, who else are they going to bring in to try and help beat the bad guy.

This series is brilliant and I can’t wait to read even more.
